What we require, of the machine and of everyone who builds it

We make machines that take people out of repetitive and hazardous work, and we build them through a production chain held to defined standards. This page sets out what those standards are: the environmental decisions designed into the machine, the certifications the production environment has to hold, and the labour conditions we require of everyone in the chain.

The machine

The environmental decisions are made in the design.

Electric drive, energy recovered under braking, one platform that does the work of several machines, and a service life long enough to pay back the cost of making it.

No engine, and nothing burned where it works

The machine is fully electric. No exhaust, no fuel handling and no engine noise at the point of work, which is what lets it run indoors, under cover and alongside people.

Braking returns energy instead of wasting it

Braking is regenerative, so energy spent climbing comes back on the way down rather than leaving as heat in a brake disc. On sloping ground that is the difference between a duty cycle that fits the battery and one that does not.

One machine that becomes many

What the platform is on any given day is decided by the attachment on its deck. A site that changes the attachment does not need to buy, house and eventually scrap a separate machine for every job.

Built to be kept

Spares, diagnostics, maintenance and technical support continue after handover. Most of the environmental cost of a machine is incurred in making it, so a machine that stays in service is the one that pays that cost back.

The production chain

The floor every supplier has to meet.

These are the minimum criteria for the production environment our systems are built in. They are the floor rather than the ambition: work that cannot be produced under them is work we do not place. Certificates are held where the work is done and can be evidenced on request.

Labour and modern slavery

Conditions of doing business with us.

Modern slavery, exploitative recruitment and unsafe working conditions are risks that live in supply chains rather than in head offices. These are the terms we require of ours, and we expect the same of anyone who supplies into it.

Employment is lawful and voluntary

Everyone working on our systems, in our production chain or on our sites does so under a lawful contract they entered freely and can leave. Wages, hours, rest and leave meet or exceed the law of the country the work is done in.

No forced labour, in any form

No forced, bonded, indentured or prison labour anywhere in the chain. No worker pays a fee to get a job, and no worker has identity documents, wages or possessions withheld to keep them in one.

No child labour

No one under the legal minimum working age, and no one under 18 in hazardous work. Age is verified at engagement rather than assumed.

Representation without penalty

Workers are free to associate, to organise and to raise a concern, including about us, without retaliation of any kind.

A supplier who cannot meet these terms is not a supplier we keep. Anyone with a concern about conditions anywhere in our chain can write to info@factorizer.uk, and can do so without giving a name.

Environmental management is a condition, not a preference

ISO 14001 sits in the required set for the production environment our systems are built in. Identifying and controlling environmental impact is part of the price of doing the work.

Designed so there is less to make

One platform that changes job with its attachment replaces several single-purpose machines. The cleanest machine on a site is the one that never had to be built.

Steel, and what happens to it afterwards

Structural work is fabricated to EN 1090-2 EXC3. Steel built to a known execution class can be assessed, repaired and, at the end of a long life, recycled as a material rather than written off as waste.

Kept running rather than replaced

Long-term service, spares and diagnostics exist so that a fault is a repair. Extending the working life of a delivered machine is the largest environmental decision available to us after the decision to make it electric.

People

The safety case is the reason the machine exists.

The strongest case for taking a person out of a cab is not cost. It is work that is repetitive, continuous, or hazardous enough that being there is itself the risk. That is where these machines are aimed, and occupational health and safety management sits in the required set for the environment they are built in.

An unmanned machine still has to be supervised by someone who is not an engineer, and has to hand control back without surprising the person taking it. How that handover works is designed rather than left to a manual, because the moment control changes hands is the moment a safety case is either sound or theoretical.
